Not every clog is the same
Kitchen grease, hair and soap in a tub, paper in a toilet line, tree roots in a sewer, and a broken or bellied pipe all behave differently and need different tools. A small drain machine handles a bathroom sink. A main line with roots needs a full-size cable machine with a cutting head, or a hydro jetter. Running the wrong tool either does nothing or damages the pipe.
We start by figuring out what is affected. One slow sink is a branch line problem. Every drain in the house gurgling and the lowest drain backing up is a main sewer line problem. That distinction decides the equipment, the access point, and the price.
Cable machine vs. hydro jetter vs. chain knocker
A cable machine punches through a stoppage and cuts roots; it is the right tool for most calls. A hydro jetter scours the full inside of the pipe with high-pressure water and is the right tool for heavy grease, scale, or a line that clogs again every few months. A chain knocker is for descaling cast iron. Matthew’s sewer cleaning guide, linked below, explains each one and when we actually recommend it instead of just selling it.
When cleaning is not enough
If a line clogs repeatedly, something is causing it: roots getting back in through a joint, a belly in the pipe holding water, a break, or an offset. Cleaning restores flow for a while; it does not fix the pipe. When we see signs of that, we recommend a camera inspection so you can see the problem yourself before anyone talks about repair.
When to call
- A sink, tub, shower, or floor drain empties slowly
- More than one fixture is backing up at once
- Gurgling from drains when a toilet flushes or the washer drains
- Sewage odor or water returning after a temporary clearing
How we approach it
- Identify which fixtures and lines are affected
- Choose the equipment for the pipe material and the likely blockage
- Clear the stoppage and watch for signs of a damaged line
- Recommend a camera inspection or repair only if the line calls for it
A practical recommendation
Chemical drain cleaners do more harm than good in older pipes and can injure the next person who opens the drain. Skip them and call.
Common questions
- Do you clean main sewer lines?
- Yes. Main line cleaning is most of what we do in this category, through a cleanout or a pulled toilet if no cleanout exists.
- Is hydro jetting worth the extra cost?
- For heavy grease or a line that keeps clogging, yes. For a one-time stoppage, a cable machine is usually all you need and we will say so.
