No hot water, not enough hot water, leaks, popping, rusty water, or a tankless unit throwing error codes. We diagnose tank and tankless water heaters and tell you straight whether a repair makes sense or the money is better spent on replacement.

What usually goes wrong
Most water heater calls in Tulsa come down to a short list: a failed heating element or thermostat on an electric unit, a thermocouple, gas valve, or igniter problem on a gas unit, a pressure relief valve that has started dripping, or sediment that has built up in the bottom of the tank until the heater rumbles, pops, and takes forever to recover. Tankless units have their own list, and it depends on the model, but a clogged air intake filter and a failed control board are the two we see most, along with scale buildup and gas supply problems.
Tulsa water is moderately hard, and that shows up in water heaters. Sediment and scale are behind a large share of the noise, slow recovery, and early failures we see. It is also why maintenance matters more here than people expect.
Repair or replace: how we decide
A tank that is leaking from the tank itself is done. There is no repair for a rusted-through vessel, and we will not pretend otherwise. Leaks at the fittings, the relief valve, or the drain valve are a different story and are usually a straightforward fix.
For everything else, we weigh three things: the age of the heater, the cost of the part and labor, and what the rest of the unit looks like. A five-year-old heater with a bad element gets repaired. A fourteen-year-old heater with a bad gas valve and a rusty anode is a conversation about replacement, because the next failure is not far behind. We will give you our honest read either way and let you make the call.
Tankless repair
Tankless heaters are reliable when they are installed right and maintained, and frustrating when they are not. The common calls are a clogged air filter, a control board that has failed, scale in the heat exchanger, or a gas line that was never sized for the unit. Beyond that there are more components and moving parts in a tankless unit than in a tank, and any of them can fail. We service most major brands. There are a couple we recommend against simply because of how they treat the customer.
When to call
- No hot water, or hot water that runs out fast
- Popping, rumbling, or knocking from the tank
- Rusty (reddish) water or a rotten-egg smell from the hot side only — if cold water does it too, the problem is in the lines, not the heater
- Water around the base of the heater or at the fittings
- Pilot will not stay lit, or a tankless unit shows an error code
How we approach it
- Talk through the symptoms and the heater’s age by phone
- Test the elements, thermostats, gas controls, or tankless sensors as needed
- Give you a repair-or-replace recommendation with the reasoning
- Complete the repair and confirm hot water at the fixtures
A practical recommendation
If water is pooling around the heater, shut off the cold water supply valve on top of the unit and, for electric heaters, turn off the breaker. That stops the damage while you call.
Common questions
- How long should a water heater last?
- Tank heaters commonly last 10 to 15 years in Tulsa; well-maintained ones go longer. Tankless units often run 20 years or more with regular descaling.
- Why does my water heater pop and rumble?
- Sediment on the bottom of the tank traps water, which boils and bursts through the layer. Read our guide on popping and bubbling sounds for the full explanation.
- Can you repair a leaking water heater?
- If the leak is from a fitting or valve, usually yes. If the tank itself is leaking, it needs to be replaced.
